According to the National Science Foundation, only 11 percent of engineers and 26 percent of math and computer scientists in 2007 were female. In an opinion piece appearing in Mass High Tech, members of the Girls Coalition of Greater Boston applaud the creation of the Governor’s STEM Council to increase the interest and proficiency of Massachusetts’ students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The authors also call for the new Council to make STEM education for girls, especially outside of school hours, a priority.
