NEW AND NOTEWORTHY
Strong Women, Strong Girls, a Boston-based national nonprofit that provides mentoring programs for low-income girls, today announced that it has been named the national Philanthropic Business of the Year by Classy Awards.
Strong Women, Strong Girls (SWSG) competed against 40 entrants across the United States to win the distinction.
Strong Women, Strong Girls Founder and President, Lindsay Hyde, said, “Strong Women, Strong Girls is creating a movement to recognize the passion, the talent, and the leadership that women and girls are providing in communities nationwide.”
Founder and CEO of Zappos.com, Tony Hsieh, who presented the award, said, “Strong Women, Strong Girls has demonstrated a commitment and passion to building a culture of service and volunteerism.”
The CLASSY Awards is a national competition recognizing the top philanthropic achievements by charities, businesses, and individuals in eight major cities nationwide: Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York City, San Diego, San Francisco, and Washington D.C.
Awards are given in 10 categories and are based on votes by the communities being served. More than 275,000 votes were cast nationally in this year’s awards competition.
The awards ceremony was held earlier this month in San Diego, California. More than $100,000 in the form of cash and in-kind services was donated to support the charitable efforts of the national award winners in each of the 10 categories honored.
Founded in 2004, SWSG fosters high aspirations among low-income girls and helps them to develop the skills needed for success. College women, who are trained as mentors, engage girls after school hours on a weekly basis. SWSG’s Boston chapter work with women and girls in 12 neighborhoods throughout Greater Boston.
