Book Discussion: Wage Theft in America
The Discount Foundation invited Kim Bobo, founder and Executive Director of Interfaith Worker Justice, to discuss her new book Wage Theft in America: Why Millions of Americans Are Not Getting Paid and What We Can Do About It.
Bobo pointed out that wage theft is a crime rampant among employers in the U.S., but does not garner much public debate or discussion due to the inadequacy of regional or national pushback forces. The Economic Policy Foundation, a business-funded think tank, estimated that companies annually steal $19 billion in unpaid overtime. Ms. Bobo also highlighted some effective deterrents to wage theft, including unionization, the passage of the Employee Free Choice Act, and the growing movement of workers’ centers nationwide.
